It’s our belief that the greatest thing we can do as Disciples of Christ is to help others. After all, when our neighbors near and far are well, we are well. For that reason we offer time and resources to partners around the world. We rely upon the manpower and financial backing of members and friends to continue our global outreach efforts. Mount Calvary currently maintains partnerships in four nations:
In 1992 we began a partnership with the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria. Mount Calvary and our companion church, the Jimeta Cathedral Church, support 18 missionary families (Aikakku) in the Bali region of Taraba State, Nigeria. The Aikakku families live and farm along side of the people in the villages. In addition to evangelism the Aikakku and their spouses provide education, instructions in advanced farming, and health education.
Mount Calvary’s portion of the support for this project averages $60 per month per family. If you’d like to contribute to this ministry, we ask that you make a donation to Mount Calvary, with "Bali Project" written on the memo line of a check or mentioned in an accompanying note.
Demsa Health Referral Center
In the mid 1990’s Mount Calvary raised money to build a small Health Center, consisting of two buildings at Demsa, Adamawa, Nigeria. After over 20 years of use the buildings needed to be renovated and upgraded. Mount Calvary used funds from the Mission Ready Capital Campaign and working with the Minneapolis Area Synod and other area churches raised a total of $250,000 for the project. Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry volunteered to coordinate the renovation.
Demolition and renovation started in mid 2014. In addition to the renovations of the building a new water supply system was installed and the buildings were connected to the local electric grid with a back-up generator and an non-uninterruptible power supply system installed for the surgery.
Mount Calvary members traveled to Haiti to witness how food packed at Mount Calvary is being used to impact change. They experienced the joy of directly serving children and discovering the profound effect of nutritious food in times of need. The travelers also assembled and delivered water filtration systems and benches for schools, painted the school director's office building, handed out love bundles, visited orphanages and delivered tents to the homeless.
In 2016, Mount Calvary members gifted $60,000 to provide water for 5,000 people. The project was a continuation of our commitment to respond to people in need. Local contractors placed 5,600 feet of pipe from a mountaintop source to a fountain and three water source buildings. We built a water treatment facility and finished a community shower room. This investment has had a significant reduction in disease throughout the region and freed people with more time to handle other aspects of life, building family and jobs. The local people will have earned more than our small investment after only two years, that’s a significant return on investment. The gift makes a difference, “Your accompaniment and your good heart have contributed to bring good health and joy to this poor and isolated area in Gressier” said Reverend Lauvanus.
In 1990 the Minneapolis Area Synod and Leipzig, Germany, became partner synods. Mount Calvary pursued a relationship with Bethlehem Community Church that has endured over time. That relationship is one of mutual encouragement and occasional partnership in ministry.
Our adult choir visited the congregation in Leipzig. Pastor Dave traveled to Leipzig as part of a Dietrich Bonhoeffer anniversary with the Bishop, Augsburg faculty and others. Several Mount Calvary members keep in contact with the church’s parishioners and some have visited while traveling in Germany.
Over the years, youth exchanges between our Synod and their District, as well as adult exchanges relative to social ministries that involved the Presidents of LSS, Fairview, and Augsburg College have all sustained and even boosted this partnership.

Since 1996, many Mount Calvary members have sponsored hundreds of Indian children through Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry (LPGM), which began a relationship with two Lutheran Church bodies in South India to educate and support village children in need.
